It is possible to explain why FGC is a culturally valued practice in certain cultures without condoning it, but even while condemning it, intervention may be complex. Take the seemingly more benign feminist objective of equal pay for equal work as an analogy. Suppose you find a situation where women are routinely paid less for the same work as men and you decide to intervene on moral grounds. Objections from the boss and male workers are to be expected, but you may also find women objecting. Then what? You are going to have to engage in a program of education in social values and processes for both men and women, and you are likely to continue to meet opposition. You are going to have to explore the reasons for their opposition (both men and women). In all situations that involve morals and human rights, you cannot begin from the stance that your moral values are self-evidently the best ones. You have to re-examine yourself as strenuously as you examine the practices you are challenging.

This project can be carried out in a number of different ways and before you do it you should have a detailed discussion with your instructor, because there are numerous methodological pitfalls and ethical traps to avoid.
